In Ogun State, right now, one of the senatorial districts that will be keenly contested is the Ogun East Senatorial District. That is the senatorial district where many of the political gladiators from that district come from.
The
current Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun is from there. So also
former Ogun Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and the incumbent Ogun East Senator,
Lekan Mustapha. That is also where Hon. Ladi Adebutu comes from.
Over
the last few weeks, a lot has been happening in that zone which has altered
previous permutations and thrown up new realities.
Before
now, the permutation was that while Gov. Abiodun seeks re-election, the Senate
slot will go to Otunba Gbenga Daniel, one of the key players who helped Abiodun
to power in 2019. And the general perception was that Senator Lekan Mustapha
would step up his game to run for governorship with the support of Senator
Ibikunle Amosun. The rumour mill had it that Senator Lekan Mustapha, who is
quite close to Senator Ibikunle Amosun, will be fielded by the Amosun Camp for
governorship, come 2023.
But
with recent developments, all those permutations have changed. Mustapha has
decided to seek re-election, with the full support of the governor. And he has
dumped the Amosun Camp for Dapo Abiodun's Camp. He has collected his Nomination
Form to enable him run for a 2nd term (or a 3rd term if you add his initial
term before now). He also got Gov. Dapo Abiodun to raise his hands up, as the
aspirant of choice.
With
this, Mustapha will be facing OGD who is equally a strong contender, at the APC
primaries.
One
of the reasons Gov. Abiodun favours Mustapha to go back is that by the next
election, Mustapha would have completed 2 straight terms and he, Abiodun can
then step into the Ogun East Senate seat
after he finishes his 2 term as Governor. All efforts to reconcile Gov. Abiodun
& OGD have failed.
